WORLD ANIMAL DAY, October 4th - Raising Awareness For The Welfare Of Animals

This important awareness day was established by Heinrich Zimmermann, a German-Jewish writer, publisher, and tireless animal welfare activist. The first event was organised in March 1925.

Later, the date was moved to October to coincide with the anniversary of the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology. He believed that all creatures deserved love and care.

The day is a global reminder that animals are sentient beings who feel pain, joy, and fear. It highlights the threats wild and farmed animals face, such as habitat loss, exploitation, and climate change.

It brings together animal advocates, schools, welfare organisations, charities, communities, and businesses to act as a global force for good.

The 2026 theme “See the World Through Their Eyes” challenges us to imagine life from a different perspective. It is a reminder that it is not just humans who are being affected by our changing climate, giving us even further motivation to act.

World Animal Day is an important educational tool that informs people about animal cruelty, neglect, and the need for stronger protection laws. It also encourages us to reflect on the vital role animals play in our lives and ecosystems, and to promote greater compassion and respect for the animal kingdom.

The Biodiversity Crisis

Earth's biodiversity faces a crisis: 1 million species are threatened with extinction without major changes to land use, protection, and climate action. Already, 85% of global wetlands have been destroyed, 100 million hectares of rainforest have been cleared, and wildlife populations have dropped 73% between 1970 and 2020.
