FEDERAL RESERVE
The Federal Reserve, often referred to as the Fed, serves as the central bank of the United States. Established in 1913, its primary purpose is to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and stable monetary and financial system. The Fed's key responsibilities include managing inflation, supervising and regulating banks, maintaining financial stability, and providing banking services to depository institutions and the federal government.
It operates through a network of 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks, each serving a specific area of the country. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is a critical component, responsible for setting monetary policy, particularly through open market operations. By adjusting the federal funds rate, the Fed influences economic activity, striving to achieve maximum employment and stable prices. Its actions and decisions are closely watched by financial markets worldwide, reflecting its significant role in the global economy.
