Metta's Career
Shortly after completing a Ph.D in sociology at the University of California, Spencer joined the University of Toronto's sociology department. In 1989, she founded the university's Peace and Conflict Studies Program, which she coordinated and also delivered lectures specialising in peace and war studies. Metta has extensively researched peace and conflict in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. She has also published and edited numerous books on the topic.
More recently, Spencer has become involved in the climate change movement. She is a strong advocate for carbon tax policies. Metta spent five years as president of Science for Peace, a peace education and research non-profit organisation that works towards demilitarisation, decarbonisation and social justice.
Project Save The World
Metta is the founding president of Project Save the World – a fantastic platform which brings together activists, researchers and concerned citizens working to protect our planet for future generations.
The project hosts 60-minute forums with experts (as videos, audios, podcasts, and transcripts) featuring humanity's most critical issues, including global warming, famine, pandemics, radioactivity, cyber attacks, AI, economic crises, governance, and human rights.
Peace Magazine
Metta is the founding president and editor of Peace Magazine, which began in 1985. The magazine is published by the Canadian Disarmament Information Service (CANDIS), of which Metta is also the president and director.
The Canadian magazine focuses on disarmament, peacebuilding and conflict resolution. Its original purpose was to publish Toronto-area peace events, but it has since grown into a broader tabloid offering critical comment and highlighting under-reported issues in the peace world.
Through her publications, activism, and the bringing together of like-minded individuals and organisations, Metta continues to inspire a more harmonious world, reinforcing the power of informed, collective action in achieving sustainable peace and tackling major global challenges.
Through informed dialogue, cross-border cooperation, and shared responsibility, we can all work together towards a better world.
