SHIPS FOR GAZA 2026 - Humanitarian Aid Flotilla to Gaza

In spring 2026, international civil society coalitions, the Global Sumud Flotilla and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, launched peaceful missions with the aim of breaking the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza and delivering lifesaving humanitarian aid to the desperately struggling population in Gaza.

On April 12, more than 70 boats and 3,000 participants from 100 countries set sail in a powerful symbol of solidarity with Palestinians and their plight against Israel’s genocide campaign.

In light of the severity of medicide stripping the population of healthcare (including vital infrastructure, medicines, and access to healthcare professionals), the flotilla carried a dedicated medical fleet of 1,000 healthcare professionals, carrying vital supplies to help Gaza’s decimated healthcare system.

The ships set sail from various points in Europe but were quickly intercepted by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) off the coast of Crete on April 30th. This resulted in the detention of 181 activists.

After regrouping, the remaining ships attempted to sail again. On May 18th, they were intercepted yet again off the coast of Cyprus. This time, 430 activists were detained. The foreign ministries of several countries have condemned their mistreatment, as many of the detainees spoke out about physical, psychological, and sexual abuse.

The IDF has denied these claims, but once they were released in Istanbul, it was clear that many of the activists had endured severe injuries, including broken bones.

Who are the Global Sumud Flotilla?

This is a global movement of ordinary people who are dedicated to supporting the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. They are independent and unaffiliated with any government.

The spring 2026 mission was their largest action to date, with over 70 boats, 1000 participants, and involvement from more than 70 countries.

Their mission is to expose the failures of international judicial bodies to address systemic war crimes in Gaza. They highlight the critical role of global civil society in enforcing humanitarian law and demanding accountability for these crimes.

Their cargo is mostly sourced from local NGOs and community organisations. All items are inspected, documented, and sealed before entering storage. Every vessel carries a complete, itemised manifest.

The siege on Gaza had made it impossible to deliver essential aid by any other means. Items include:

• Dried and tinned food and emergency nutrition
• Sanitary and hygiene products
• Medicines and medical supplies
• Basic construction tools
• Educational materials

Despite launching some of the largest civilian maritime convoys in history, they have yet to be successful in breaching the Israeli naval blockade and delivering these critical items.

Who are the Freedom Flotilla Coalition? (FFC)

The FFC is a long-standing network of international campaigns and initiatives advocating for Palestine and working to end the blockade. They have over 15 years of experience running sea missions. They provide the logistical backbone and navigational expertise needed for these missions.

Their goals are to educate people around the world about the devastating consequences of the blockade, the unlivable conditions it imposes, and that this is a man-made humanitarian crisis imposed by choice.

They condemn and publicise the complicity of Israel, other governments, and global actors who enable the blockade. They are fiercely critical of the U.S. government's financial support of Israel’s military, which equates to approximately $4 billion every year. The U.S. has also blocked action by the UN Security Council through their use of its veto for three decades, protecting Israel from condemnation.

What Is Next for the Flotilla & How Can I help?

With interceptions by Israel reaching unprecedented distances, some occurring over 1,000 kilometres away from Gaza, this has led to a shift in focus on the legality of such far-reaching blockades.

Organisers are pressing Western governments to take a stronger stand against the interception of civilian vessels in international waters, and especially in regard to the detention and mistreatment of participants.

Legal teams working with the coalitions are compiling accounts of physical abuse, tasering, and other mistreatment by the released participants in an attempt to hold the Israeli government accountable.

Ships for Gaza is not just an aid delivery mechanism but a permanent act of civil resistance. Despite the loss and damage of many ships and the traumatic experiences of activists, they remain determined in their commitment to direct action.

They are currently regrouping, raising funds, repairing vessels, and preparing for their next attempt at breaking the blockade.
