General Information
World Teachers' Day is a poignant reminder of the vital role educators play in shaping society. Organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Education International (EI), it commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
This year marks 60 years since its adoption. The recommendation was the first to set out guidelines for teachers' rights and responsibilities, as well as standards for their training, recruitment, employment, and working conditions, to promote their status.
It also honours the dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment of teachers who carry the heavy responsibility of inspiring and nurturing the minds of future generations.
Without great teachers, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 is simply impossible.

The Teaching Profession In Crisis
Despite the recognised importance of teachers to our societies, teachers worldwide struggle with low pay, heavy workloads, poor working conditions, and a lack of voice in educational decision-making, undermining recruitment and retention.
- The human right to education cannot be realised without trained, qualified teachers, yet a global shortage of 50 million teachers persists.
- Sub-Saharan Africa is the most severely affected region, with an estimated need for 15 million new teachers by 2030.
- An estimated 70% of countries face teacher shortages at the primary school level and 90% at the secondary level.
- To meet SDG4, financing for additional teachers needed to cover salaries for new primary and secondary teaching posts by 2030 is $120 billion annually.
- Teachers are leaving the profession at more than twice the rate as 5 years ago, especially in secondary education. At least 30% of those who resigned had been teaching for less than five years.
- Half of all countries pay teachers less than other professions which require similar levels of qualifications.

2026 Theme - 60 Years Of Protecting The Profession, Advancing Its Status & Shaping Our Futures
This year, we celebrate progress in recognising the vital role teachers play in our societies, highlight the challenges teachers face, and call on policymakers to increase efforts to protect, promote, and elevate the status of the profession.
This year's official celebration took place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris; it was opened by UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany. The ceremony brought together teachers, ministers of education, policymakers, academics, young people, teacher organisations, and institutions from around the world.
The discussions focused on protecting and advancing the teaching profession and gave teachers and the public a space to interact and share perspectives.
There was a strong focus on:
- Revising the 1966 Standards - A need to update the decades-old framework to reflect 21st-century classroom environments and issues.
- Modern Pressures - How educators can navigate today's issues, including generative AI, climate change, migration, and inclusion.
- The "Status" Crisis - Teachers must be culturally valued and respected. We can raise the status of teachers by granting them greater autonomy and a voice in national policymaking. The global teacher shortage must be managed through improved pay, reduced workloads, and stronger retention support.
