Abkhazia operates as a de facto independent republic, while Georgia and most of the international community view it as Russian-occupied Georgian territory. Only a few countries, including Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Nauru, officially recognise Abkhazia.

The 1992–1993 war erupted after Georgian troops were deployed to restore control following Georgia’s independence. It resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of roughly 250,000 ethnic Georgians. Georgia was not successful.

The 2008 Russo-Georgian war resulted in Georgia losing effective control over Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Hundreds were killed, and almost 200,000 were displaced. Russia officially recognised both South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states.

In late 2024, tensions rose in Abkhazia over growing Russian economic influence and proposed property and investment laws, sparking intense political protests. It led to the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania.
