HIROSHIMA DAY - The Hiroshima Water Lanterns Ceremony

Discover the poignant tradition of the annual Water Lanterns Ceremony and learn how handwritten prayers honour the horrific events of 1945.

Known locally as tōrō nagashi, this memorial service takes place along the Motoyasu River, flowing next to the Atomic Bomb Dome where many casualties took their final breaths in 1945. The tradition began when bereaved families and residents floated handmade lanterns down the river as a memorial and offering of condolences for lost loved ones.

Today, it attracts thousands of Japanese and international visitors who come to pay their respects. Each illuminated paper lantern carries heartfelt messages for world peace.
