GUATEMALA & BELIZE - Long-Standing Territorial Dispute Awaiting Final ICJ Ruling In Late 2027

The territorial dispute between Belize and Guatemala stems from colonial-era claims, rooted heavily in the 1859 Treaty between Great Britain and Guatemala. Guatemala argued that the unfulfilled treaty nullified the agreement, claiming large portions of Belizean territory.

Despite these ongoing tensions, Belize achieved independence on September 21, 1981, securing international recognition while Guatemala maintained its territorial claim.

To resolve the dispute, both nations held historic referendums, Guatemala in 2018 and Belize in 2019, where citizens voted to submit the matter to the UN's highest court. This led to ongoing International Court of Justice (ICJ) proceedings to establish a final, legally binding boundary.
